Special Literary Event: Meet and hear author Jessica
Rudd daughter of former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd
Hosted by Mount Gambier Library come and meet Jessica Rudd as she tours as part of the
Get Reading! Initiative (www.getreading.com.au).
From the author of the extremely enjoyable debut fiction, Campaign Ruby, comes another
light-hearted comedy of political manners. Jessica Rudd’s sequel – Ruby Blues – picks up after the election balloons have sagged and Ruby is finding out just how hard it is to have – or keep – it all.
Join our Special Literary Event with Jessica Rudd as she talks about her latest book, life in
bustling Beijing, and how she has coped with four career changes – from law, to PR, to politics, to full-time writer – in as many years (on top of being the daughter of one of the country’s most infamous ex-Prime Ministers!).
Collins Booksellers will have copies of Jessica’s books for sale at the event, and Jessica will be available to sign them. Tickets are limited and can be purchased from the Library.

Reading Rocks Session:
Saturdays mornings at the library are never boring!
Scratch & Patch visited Saturday the 21st May, greeting children and reading stories together. Families had a lot of fun enjoying the entertainment on the library balcony with a cosy area for the kids to play in.
Every Saturday at 11am we also have storytime, so come down with the kids and check it out. Theres always songs, dance, a story and craft.
Antiques Road Show event:
Special Library Winter Market
Sunday 5th June
Rug up for this one!
We are holding a special Winter Market on the Library balcony Sunday 5th June.
Environmental Month is also happening so the library will be alive with demonstrations including live music from talented locals Christy and Jason Wallace, live snake show and
environmental street performers The Connies.
With over 2000 people attending the last market we are hoping for another great attendance. With an abundance of food and handcrafted pieces there is something for everyone.
What better way to spend a winter Sunday than to peruse around the winding verandah sampling local produce , finishing off with a coffee and the paper in the library.
The Library markets have been compared to the famous Salamanca Markets of Tasmania, having a quirky metropolitan feel in our thriving inner city precinct. The special part of the event is that you get to meet the artisans and producers who have made or grown what they are selling which I believe makes the experience even more enriching.
YOU CAN LOOK FORWARD TO ALL THIS AT THE MARKET:
Pastries, jams and pickles
Home made baking (brownies, slices, cakes and biscuits)
Fresh fruit and veggies low carbon foot print because its grown locally
Rowallan Olive oil and products
Dickens Delight Toffees
Children’s clothes
Boutique fashion
Handmade jewellery
Handmade toys, cushions, cards, candles, quilts, painting
Graphic design
Live music all day from local musicians Christy and Jason Wallace & Pat Hussey
We look forward to seeing you here!

New Art Gallery of SA Director
on regional roadshow to Mount Gambier
The Art Gallery of South Australia’s new Director, Nick Mitzevich, is coming to Mount Gambier to share his exciting plans for the Gallery’s future with the local community as part of a eight-city regional roadshow across SA.
The youngest ever Director in the Art Gallery’s 130 year history, Mitzevich is travelling across the state to meet as many South Australians as possible in the first regional roadshow of its kind undertaken by the Gallery.
"One of my key objectives as the new Director is to connect with South Australians in regional areas to show them that the Art Gallery is their Gallery too – it’s not just for people living in Adelaide," says Mitzevich.
In Mount Gambier, Nick invites locals to a free public event on Thursday 10 March at the Mount Gambier Library, where he will outline his bold new vision for the state’s Art Gallery. Mount Gambier residents will also gain a sneak preview of the Gallery’s new-look North Terrace entrance and Australian galleries – currently closed for major refurbishment – and hear about Nick’s next big project, a spectacular exhibition by internationally acclaimed artist, Patricia Piccinini, opening mid-April.
Born into a Hunter Valley farming family, Nick Mitzevich relocated to South Australia in July last year, having previously been Director of the University of Queensland Art Museum and the Newcastle Region Art Gallery.
In addition to Mount Gambier, during February and March, Mitzevich will tour to meet the locals in Whyalla, Port Augusta, Port Pirie, Pt Lincoln, Murray Bridge and Victor Harbor, as well as the major outer-suburban centres of Elizabeth and Noarlunga.
Says Mitzevich, "Every year around 75,000 people from regional SA visit the Art Gallery. I’d like to see that number grow and I hope that some of the exciting new projects I’ll be talking about on my regional roadshow will convince locals that it’s worth making the trip."

Capture that special Moment
I am sure you have a great picture that has captured a special moment between a child and a special man in their lives. They could be their dad, granddad, uncle foster dad or even older brother! These are the type of pictures that make up the Thanks Dad National Exhibition and, without pictures like yours being contributed; they couldn’t run this wonderful exhibition of these moments.
The National Thanks Dad people’s Choice Exhibition is currently being displayed at The Mount Gambier Library this March.
To support this local exhibition of the National Photos there is a local Thanks Dad Photo Competition being run through The Mount Gambier Library. Categories will be judged in 15 years and under photographer and 16 years and older photographer. Prizes for both categories are $50.00 Book City vouchers and the local competition closes 27th March 2011. All entries into this competition will be submitted in the National Competition and go onto the website and become part of the National Exhibition for 2011/12 that will tour the country for people to enjoy. Be part of this exhibition that helps encourage more men to spend quality time with their children.
The competition is not judged on technical quality – rather on capturing that special moment between the child and the man in their life.
The exhibition will be on display until 27th March in the Mount Gambier library where the public can vote for their favourite photo and enter a prize draw.
For more information on how to enter please call the Mount Gambier library 87212540 or call in for an entry form.

Through the use of stories, rhymes, songs and craft, Storytime helps to promote a lifelong love of books and the use of libraries, whilst also developing and encouraging pre-reading skills, listening and language skills and sparking children’s creativity and imagination.
Each week close to 100 children, mum’s, dad’s and grandparents participate in the sessions, resulting in 40 stories being read, 160 nursery rhymes sung and almost 2,500 individual ‘works of art’ being created by the children over the past 12 months.

Market success:
Mount Gambier Library’s inaugural Sunday Arts & Craft Market held on 7th November exceeded organiser Cathryn Harris expectations. Fourteen local artisans came together under the library’s covered verandah to display some amazing creations. There was a real buzz in and around the library with many people commenting on how great the concept was.
During the course of the day over 1600 people visited the stalls and vendors expressed their delight at the number items sold throughout the day.
The Bookmark Cafe recorded one of its busiest days since opening in December 2009. By 4pm the cafe had exhausted supplies of most food items and was down to their last 1 litre of milk. At one point the four staff almost felt the need to call for reinforcements as they were run off their feet.
The 1600 people also kept library staff busy with a number of reference queries and over 1000 items being checked out.
The next market is planned for Sunday 5th December which should prove extremely popular leading up to Christmas. Most of the fourteen stall holders have already pre-booked their stalls with a number of new vendors also keen to participate. With the added interest stall holders will be able spill out onto the verandah of the Civic Centre which will bring the entire precent alive.
Due to the popularity of the Arts & Craft market a Produce – Lifestyle market is planned for Sunday 12th December. Twenty stall areas will be available for producers of local produce such as vegetables, fruit, cheese, chocolate, bread, meat and wines. Local plant growers will also have the opportunity to display their products. If anyone is interested in a stall for the Produce-Lifestyle market please contact Cathryn Harris 87212540 to secure a place.
